Surfshark’s study examined the timeline and frequency of recorded AI incidents and found that 2023 already has more than half the number of AI incidents reported in all of 2022. You can access the study results HERE.
Key findings:
- From 2010 to 2014, the yearly number of AI incidents remained below 10 per year. From 2014 onwards, the number of incidents grew significantly each year, with 2022 reaching 91 incidents.
- As of May 2023, this year already has more than half the number (55) of AI incidents reported in all of 2022 (91). This suggests that 2023 is on track to exceed all previous years in terms of AI incidents.
- The study divided the past two decades into three distinct stages of AI implementation, starting with the early implementation of AI (between 2010-2014), which had only an average of 5 incidents per year (3% of all incidents).
- Growth of AI (2014-2019) accounts for 40% of all reported cases, averaging 35 per year.
- The most recent AI adoption stage, exemplified by the development of GPT-3 by OpenAI in 2020, accounts for 57% of all incidents across a wide range of industries, with an average of 79 per year.

A recent prominent example is the viral deepfake image of Pope Francis in a white puffer jacket, demonstrating the astonishing realism achievable with AI image generators. However, the implications go beyond amusement, as AI-enhanced fake news could continue to mislead the public in the future. Other, more severe AI incidents can go as far as enabling racism, violence, or crimes.” says Elena Babarskaite, a Spokeswoman at Surfshark.
