Looking to buy an Apple TV? You might want to wait — or rather, you might not have a choice. Apple is no longer accepting orders for the device online, which suggests that a refresh is coming.
Not that this comes as a surprise.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Apple had received new “set top boxes” with “communication function” from supplier BYD Precision Manufacturer. The three mysterious packages were on Aug. 11, Aug. 18, and Aug. 25.
Were Apple to announce a new Apple TV at next week’s iPhone event, it would be the first generational update for the “hobby” device since March 2012. A third-generation “rev A” update was released last January.
Apple has long been rumored to be working on some sort of HDTV product. The so-called “iTV” is expected to offer consumers an HDTV set along with a built-in Internet-powered TV service.
Cupertino isn’t expected to announce an iTV next week. However, the release of a new Apple TV could shed some light on what software on an Apple television may look like.
As a reminder, Apple’s iPhone event begins on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. PDT. Stay tuned.
